Kentucky Derby style

Have you ever been to a Kentucky Derby party? The run for the roses is today! You don’t have to live in Kentucky to enjoy all the fun. The K Derby may be all about horses, but I am more interested in the OTT fashions than the race.

If you are not familiar with K Derby fashion, it’s ALL about the hats, the bigger the better and overly decorated to the hilt. You also dress up, so you know that combo has my name all over it lol.

It was fun creating these looks with one of our daughters, I think this will become a yearly tradition. We had a lot of laughs trying to see around them taking the photos. She, like many, was shocked by the size of hats Derby goers wear. They can also come with a large price tag too.

Some Derby hats can go for $900 or more… LOL that’s crazy to me. Being the fashion frugalista I am, I thrifted our dresses and DIYed our hats I made our hats with $2 tulle and faux flowers from my porch. In keeping with Derby style, I created them to match our outfits, hers a $10 pink and red floral vintage style dress and mine a $7 totally over-the-top mermaid dress with roses on it, both great floral choices for the run with the roses theme.

Funny story about my dress, I bought it last summer during a thrifting trip with my other daughter who was visiting from out of town, when I showed it to her and put it in the cart she about had a stroke lol. She thought it was “hideous” and that it looked like it was made out of foam. To this day if I mention it, she recoils lol. I told her I would be wearing it for this post, she laughed. I am sure she thinks I will receive swift fashion backlash about it lol, and maybe she’s right, but that’s okay. I like the dress and it couldn’t be more perfect for a Derby party. Even without the gaudy hat, I still like the unique and feminine style of the dress.

If you have never attended a Derby party you should at least once in your life. Don’t have one to go to? Throw one, invite your friends over to decorate their hats, order in or go out and watch the race together. I’ll be doing this with my daughters again. How often do we get to dress up and have a such a fun time oogling ginormous hats lol?

Blessings,

Eden
