DIY fall plaid poncho
Today, 2 of my creative passions merge for a DIY fall poncho!
Have you ever found an outfit online and wish you could save $$ and make it yourself? LOL would be my first response. I know just enough about sewing to be dangerous, certainly not enough to make my own creations. However, when I saw a cropped fall poncho on Pinterest, I decided it couldn’t be that hard to make, and I was right!
I wanted it long in the back and short in the front. For my height, I bought 1 1/2 yards of fabric in a fun fall plaid print. The width was already perfect to hit right above my wrists.
A real seamstress would probably laugh how I did this, but I just laid the fabric out on the table of how I wanted it to look on. I measured from my shoulder to waist and pinned the front flap in 3 places where it would end just right at my waistline. I then folded the fabric lengthwise and put a pin on the fold which would be the middle of the neck hole.
I cut a slit about 12 inches long where the pin was in the middle. I later cut the front part of the slit in a semi-half-moon shape so it wouldn’t choke me.
I used a folded bias tape to cover the raw edges, putting the fabric edge in between the fold, and pinned it all around, including the neck slit. This step was honestly the longest part of making this. All that was left was to sew it on, which went pretty quickly.
Presto!! Easy fall statement piece. I went back and bought more fabric to make a skirt but I have to summon more courage for that since a zipper will be involved, and I’ve never done that before. This is when I need to trade redoing a piece of furniture for someone’s sewing skills lol.
I am really happy with how it turned out, and how flowy it is, it handled twirling well lol…
I could have made this for half the cost if I had went with a thinner flannel instead of a thicker wool blend. The fabric was a little pricey even with my 40% off coupon, but I really liked the heavy quality of it so $27 was doable. 3 packages of the folded bias trim came to $6. All in for $33 for a one-of-a-kind poncho. DIY and fashion together made for a fun project!
Blessings,
