Patio cushion hell
Patio time in Texas means either dust off what you have or take out a 2nd mortgage to buy new patio furniture/cushions lol. The sun here is no joke, it will bleach out cushions quickly.
This begins the story of my patio cushion hell. We have a really large outdoor space. We were in the process of having a pool put in so I decided I would start buying outdoor furniture. I wanted to have several different seating areas. I had a Pinterest board full of ideas, but they were all so pricey. Some of the pool loungers I liked were “on sale” for $800 each.
LOL! I would never spend that on one chair. You all know by now that I am allergic to anything that has too many zeros on the price tag. A great thing about living in a hot state is there is no shortage of outdoor furniture on FB marketplace. For around $500, I bought 4 different sets. Including 4 ornate iron pool loungers similar to the ones above. The seller let me know she had paid $375 each.
for the other sets, I repainted the ones that needed it. All but 4 came with cushions but they were faded and ripped, typical for Texas. Originally I was just going to buy the cushions until I realized pool loungers alone are $75-100 each, and I needed TEN! Plus 7 chairs.
Silly me, I decided that I would recover or make all the patio cushions/pillows. How hard could it be? It was towards the end of pool season, I thought this would be a great sewing project that I could work on through the “chilly” months.
I chose inexpensive canvas paint dropcloths from Lowes since I had so much to sew. This would be fun……
Seriously, what was I thinking?? Saved a lot of money? yes, customized to my taste? yes. Made me never want to see a sewing machine again, YES!!!! In total, I sewed 40 cushions/throw pillows. Now granted, adding piping, trim, ruffles, and monogram patches were just extra hell points that I didn’t need to do. After day 5 I was ready to throw them all on a bonfire. I overestimated my patience for such a large project lol.
I sprayed them all down with several coats of sun/water guard. All this work and they had to sit in the garage while the pool is finally completed. We will see how durable they are against the hell fire sun that is Texas summer. I’ll keep y’all posted.
